Daniel 1

Determination

But Daniel resolved not to defile himself.

Daniel 1:8

We first meet Daniel as a young person, probably in his late teens. After enduring the trauma of deportation, Babylon strips him and his friends of their names and gives them names honoring pagan gods. They must study the ancient Near Eastern myths of religion that do not recognize God as Creator. They train in the art of divination, a practice forbidden by Yahweh (Deut. 18:9–14). It is likely they were castrated. If so, even if they returned to Jerusalem, they would not be allowed in the temple to worship (Deuteronomy 23:1).

But Daniel and his friends make the most of their situation. In their court training they respectfully ask for—not demand—a change in diet. Their stand doesn’t seem to be about eating food offered to idols. Fruits and vegetables would’ve been offered too. (Daniel 10:3 tells us Daniel did royal meat and drink later.) This test isn’t about food. Keeping the dietary restrictions of the law had not been possible for some time. On their march to Babylon, they ate what they were given or starved.

These Hebrew captives decline royal food to give God room to reveal Himself to them and to their captors.
