Mr. Cabot tried calling again. It went straight to voicemail. “But that doesn’t explain why she wouldn’t answer her phone.”
Mamma touched Jamie’s shoulder. “We need to call your father. He’ll know what to do.”
“Not yet,” she answered in Italian. “We need to check the security cameras.”
She pushed through the doors, hearing Mamma telling her twin brothers to stay put. Then footsteps hurried behind her. The front office was open.
“Ms. Holthaus, is Mr. Sheridan or Ms. Bower here?” Jamie asked.
“Ms. Bower didn’t come in today, but Mr. Sheridan is here.” Ms. Holthaus scanned the group. “What’s the matter?”
Mr. Cabot stepped forward. “My daughter, Elena Cabot, is missing.”
“Missing?” Ms. Holthaus tilted her head. “Isn’t she in the band with you, Jamie?”
“Yes.” Jamie recounted Elena’s vanishing act.
Then Mr. Cabot rapped his knuckles on the counter, speeding things up. “Can we see the security footage?”
Ms. Holthaus picked up the phone. “Let me alert Mr. Sheridan.” A moment later, she put the receiver down. “Jamie, you can take them to the security office.”
She led them down the hallway toward the athletics wing. The security office was tucked in a small room near the gym corridor, no windows, all stuffy and warm from the bank of monitors.
