There is another kind of time referred to in the Scripture. Usually when you read the words in Scripture “in the fullness of time” kairos is the word being used, in the original Greek. Jesus comes in the fullness of time. At the opportune time waited for, for centuries. Often, Kairos time is referred to as God’s time because it is quality time that often over-rides linear time in the same sense that our subjective experience often determines how we act, more than knowing objective facts. When you are in kairos time you don’t even think about wasting it because you can’t, and if you could, you wouldn’t want to.
Kairos time can best be illustrated by a conversation you have with a friend that is so rich and full that you actually lose track of linear time. Perhaps you are engaged in an activity or a process that is so meaningful or life-giving, that linear time disappears from your consciousness. All of a sudden, you look up at the clock and say, “Oh my goodness! Where did the time go?” I happen to have this kind of experience when I write. I lose track of time.

It’s great being a Chaplain at the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, working with our Veterans in addictions and mental health! Hearing their courageous stories of faith inspires me to write about the healing, transforming power of Christ in whatever ways I can. I think kids have a special knack for tuning into that spiritual reality that brings hope and meaning to our lives. I had so much fun updating the Joona Trilogy and making it work for a new generation! There is so much to write about when it comes to God, who may not always be understandable but who is always desirable.
I am married to a clinical psychologist husband who works out of Burlpres church in Burlingame CA. We like to fish, play tennis, go to the ocean with our golden retriever and golden doodle, and sail. Our three grown kids are nearby and we enjoy spending time with them too! I am a Princeton Seminary graduate and a Boston University School of Theology Doctoral nerd. I think that is all except I love it when people read what I write and comment. So please do!
