Kayla E. Green is an award-winning author and poet who writes to remind others—and herself—that light always prevails over darkness. When she isn’t writing, reading, or spending time with her family, she loves singing loudly and off-key to KLove Radio and pretending she’s a unicorn. Fittingly, her YA debut fantasy novel is titled The Goodness of Unicorns.

Why do you think the topic of your book is important?

Metamorphosis is a collection of poetry that touches on hard yet relatable topics including anxiety and depression. Still, no matter how overwhelming the waves of such stormy waters, the grace and unyielding love of Christ offers life-saving passage. Each poem is paired with a Bible verse to encourage readers to seek God’s word and the rescue we all desperately need. Through Him we are transformed.

Why do you think this topic is needed?

I refer to Metamorphosis often as “Bible verse poetry.” Readers have shared with me that they approached the collection as a devotional incorporating the paired poem and verse in their daily time with God. The poems allow readers to delve into an idea in just a few minutes and reflect on the pairing as they go about their day to day.

No matter where we each are individually on our faith walks, we all desperately need Jesus, and, in a world that tries to convince everyone otherwise, books that point us back to the Bible and the truth of God’s saving grace are needed. Whether it is poetry, nonfiction, or prose fiction, words make thoughts and feelings tangible. Written word can be a tangible connection to truth and God’s love, and, thus, books like Metamorphosis are important.

What is your favorite hymn and why?

Amazing Grace is one of my favorite hymns. It is so powerful, and it reminds me of my great-grandmother (the inspiration behind the poem “Edna” in Metamorphosis).

What is your favorite verse and why?

I have various verses that are close to my heart. One verse that I love, and summarizes the overarching theme of Metamorphosis, is “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” Romans 12:2 (NIV). It speaks to the transformative love of God—to Him be all the glory!

What is one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?

I’ve ridden a camel! 🐪 It was a wild experience to say the least during my time studying religion abroad while in college. The religious studies summer program overall was very impactful for me and played a large role in who I am today…though I never want to sit on anything as tall as a camel again! 😆
