Hidden Legacy was birthed from a story I read about a woman living in North Korea who buried her Bible in her garden. In the dead of night, when her family slept, she would carefully dig it up, brush off the soil, and read by the faint glow of moonlight—knowing discovery could mean imprisonment, torture, or death for her entire household.

Her courage reminds me that God’s Word is not just comforting; in places like North Korea, it is life itself.

This harrowing story, and others like the North Korean believers, sheds light on how often I take for granted the freedom I enjoy. Here in my home, multiple Bibles rest openly on shelves—different translations, study editions, even large-print versions I can read without fear. I flip through them casually during quiet times and discuss them freely with family and friends. Yet for our brothers and sisters in North Korea, a single page of Scripture is a priceless treasure worth risking everything for.

My deepest hope is that Hidden Legacy would stir readers to learn more about our brothers and sisters in Christ living in hostile locations. Just like 1 Corinthians 12 states, we are all part of one body: “If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.” (1 Corinthians 12:26 ESV)

But not only to learn about their plight — I hope it also moves us to pray.

Pray fervently for Bibles to reach believers through every possible channel in these hostile regions. Pray for God to protect and strengthen the underground church.

And never forget, Love is a Legacy.

Interview with the Author

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

I do hear from some readers. The first time I really sat and talked with a reader who’d annotated one of my books and asked questions I was overwhelmed with joy. The idea that they’d taken the time to dive into a story I wrote really encouraged me. I also hear from readers via my newsletter. I so appreciate the little lines of encouragement they send or the excitement over a new release. It’s like meeting friends from all walks of life and connecting in a way that’s so unique.

Do you read the genre you write? Why or why not?

Yes. First, I’ve always loved a good mystery, or suspense. I don’t like scary stuff, but I love to figure out good whodunit. At first I did it for entertainment, but now it’s definitely a part of me learning to hone my craft. I read good suspense writers and try to learn from them.

What’s your favorite writing snack, drink, and/or music?

I love to have Scottish Highland music playing the background or epic movie scores playing while I write. I’ll often use music as a springboard for a scene as well. If I’m doing a scene where music can set the tone then I find that kind of music, play it, and just free write notes.

I don’t really just have snacks on my desk, but when I go to writing retreats I need peanut m & m’s, apples, pretzels, peanut butter, Dr. Pepper, hummus and red peppers handy.

What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given about writing?

Get the first draft on paper. Ugly, messy, no grammar, just get it out. I didn’t really have a direction before I jumped into publishing, so I just wrote. But then I noticed as I stepped into wanting to pitch and be published I was very concerned about being perfect with that draft. I was given a gentle reminder that you can’t edit what isn’t on paper. I remind myself that often and just get the story down.

Is your writing space pristine or organized chaos?

Organized chaos. I have little patches of organized chaos around my home to write and create.

My organized chaos desk area is more my “work” and “novel editing” area, with multiple screens, notebooks and office supplies. I usually “creative” write in the living room while everyone is at work and school. I prefer to have my feet up, facing the back window (or be outside if it’s nice) to write a story. I have a small little circle table next to me in the living room. It holds my water bottle, notebooks, and paperbacks I’m reading. And then I have space in my room I like to write too. I have a little electric fireplace, more books and a small Christmas tree I keep up all year round.
