Donna Wyland is an award-winning author, editor, and coach. Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

I would love to hear from readers! It’s rare that I do, at least with regard to my books. People most often write to me in response to my blog and podcast as I write to encourage people through difficult times and share my personal experiences with them. It always surprises and blesses me to hear someone say that my blog or podcast touched them and was just what they needed to hear. They often say, “I am passing this on to a friend,” or a family member. And I just look at the painting of Jesus near my desk and say, “Thank you for calling me to this.”

How do you overcome writer’s block? Do you have any advice for others in finding their process to overcome it?

Writer’s Block can be difficult to overcome, but I often find that all I need is a long walk or some time to listen to my Spotify playlist – “Last Best Year, Songs of Gratitude” – and things start to get back on track. Believe it or not, doing something completely unrelated to writing often helps. Watch an episode of a favorite series. Call a friend. Work on a craft. Often we just need to get out of our head and relax, and the ideas and inspiration begin to flow again.

What’s your favorite writing snack, drink, and/or music?

I am an iced coffee fanatic who is learning to cut back on caffeine a bit more each day. I could drink it from morning til night, but I know that won’t help me get a great night’s sleep, nor will it help in the calorie department. I’m not a big snacker while I work. Sometimes I even miss lunch because I am so busy the hours pass by without me realizing I need to stop to eat. My stomach can growl all afternoon, but if I’m in a writing groove, it’s hard to take a break. Inspiration is something you need to capture when it presents itself. I try to never take it for granted.

What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given about writing?

Honestly, I’m not sure I’ve got an answer for this. I’ve been writing for more than twenty-five years now, so I feel like the best advice I have been given is to just keep writing. Persevere. Don’t give up when multiple agents, editors, or publishers decline to offer a contract. Keep going. Stay focused. Ask God what He wants you to do. Then do whatever He leads you to do. He is always faithful to guide and encourage our gifts.

Is your writing space pristine or organized chaos?

Boy, you just had to ask this one, didn’t you? LOL My writing space was pristine when my husband and I were showing our home for six months and people were in and out for Open Houses and various Showings. I didn’t like it. I couldn’t find any of my files, and it was frustrating. If you saw my desk today, you’d see stacks on both sides of my computer with piles of folders on other surfaces stacked around my office. It looks like a typhoon came through some days, but I promise I know where most things are and I find it weirdly comforting to be surrounded by papers, files, and notes.
