When I set out to write Frogman Puck Origins, I wanted to bring something genuinely new to readers, both those who read constantly and those who sometimes struggle to stay engaged. I envisioned an all-new, fully illustrated novel featuring clean, epic superheroes, told in a way that feels fresh, immersive, and meaningful.
Most superhero stories begin with accidents, mistakes, or powers gained by touching a mysterious artifact. In the world of Frogman Puck, the heroes’ origins are different. Their abilities are forged through purpose, hard work, teamwork, faith, and ingenious design. The story begins with the roots of child-like memories and grows into something much larger, showing how character is built long before power is ever used.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your book?

One of the most surprising things I learned while creating the Frogman Puck series was how much I was capable of growing in such a short time. What began as a simple 15-page children’s book expanded into a fully illustrated Christian action adventure novel with layered worldbuilding, cinematic scenes, and a faith-driven storyline.

In just a year and a half, I had to learn writing craft, illustration development, visual pacing, story structure, and branding for a faith-based sci-fi adventure series. It surprised me how much the story grew, but even more, how much I grew in discipline and creativity. Frogman Puck became more than a book. It became a Christian superhero universe designed to engage families with clean, high-quality adventure fiction.

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

We love hearing from readers. The response to the Frogman Puck series has been overwhelmingly positive.

Parents often tell us they are grateful to find a clean action-adventure series for kids that does not compromise Biblical values. Many say it is difficult to find Christian books for the family that are both exciting and rooted in a strong Biblical worldview. Frogman Puck fills that gap.

What has surprised me most is that adults enjoy the series as much as their children. Readers are blown away by the cinematic scenes, advanced technology concepts, and the deeper spiritual themes woven throughout the story. We are regularly asked about a Frogman Puck video game, action figures, t-shirts, and even a movie adaptation. That kind of excitement tells me the series resonates beyond just a single book.

How do you overcome writer’s block? Do you have advice for others?

I have experienced seasons where I was not ready to move the storyline forward. Instead of forcing it, I step back. Talking through ideas, walking outdoors, praying, and reading Scripture often unlock the creative direction I need.

Sometimes those pauses last up to a week. During that time, I work on other aspects of the Frogman Puck universe, such as illustrations, worldbuilding, or structural planning. I sketch scenes on paper, create charts of story beats, and map out conflict escalation.

My advice for other writers is this: writer’s block is often a signal that something deeper needs clarity. For me, reconnecting to Biblical truth and stepping into God’s creation helps realign the narrative. Creativity flows best when it is anchored in purpose.

How did you come up with the title for your book?

The name Frogman Puck is deeply personal and symbolic.

My SCUBA instructor was a Navy frogman. Military frogmen are elite underwater operatives trained for precision and adaptability. Frogs themselves are uniquely designed creatures. They begin life underwater as tadpoles and transform rapidly into air-breathing amphibians. This transformation happens in weeks, not millions of years.

That design concept reflects the theme of intelligent design and rapid adaptation found throughout the Frogman Puck series. The team cannot wait millions of years for evolution. They must grow, train, and adapt quickly to overcome threats.

The name Puck comes from my grandfather, John Chanaca Sr., who called me Puck. He loved the Lord wholeheartedly and encouraged us to pursue faith, integrity, and service. The character carries that legacy of courage and humility into a Christian superhero adventure setting.

How did publishing your first book change your writing process?

My first published work was a middle school story titled “Patches the Cat Is a Thief,” originally written on a typewriter. During the pandemic, my father launched MJChanacaPublishing and published it while caring for my 93-year-old grandmother.

That moment changed everything. Seeing a book move from idea to printed reality made writing tangible. After publishing several children’s books and receiving silver and bronze medals, I began asking a deeper question: what kind of fictional world could I build that honored wholesome, Biblical values?

During a hurricane deployment, I reopened Frogman Puck. What started as a simple concept exploded into a full Christian sci-fi adventure series. Publishing my early books gave me confidence, but Frogman Puck gave me vision.

It shifted my writing process from casual storytelling to intentional worldbuilding and character arcs.

Is your writing space pristine or organized chaos?

It is organized chaos with a purpose.

There is usually a cat on my lap and a dog against my leg. My laptop rests nearby, sometimes on a pillow, sometimes on my lap. It is not a sterile studio environment. It is lived in.

The space reflects the tone of the series itself. It is grounded in real life, rooted in creation, and filled with movement. The most important element is not perfection. It is a focus. When the quiet settles and distractions fade, that is when the words begin to move.
